Why Player Props Are Consistently Mispriced
If you're looking for the single best market to find +EV bets, player props are the answer. Not spreads. Not moneylines. Not totals. Player props.
The reason is structural. Sportsbooks devote their best oddsmakers and most sophisticated models to the main markets — the spread, the moneyline, the game total. These are the markets where the most money flows, where sharp bettors concentrate their action, and where the book has the strongest incentive to get the number right. As a result, main markets at major books are extremely efficient. Finding consistent +EV on NFL spreads at FanDuel is hard.
Player props are a different story. On any given NFL Sunday, a sportsbook might offer 15-20 main markets (spread, moneyline, total for each game) but 500+ player prop markets. Patrick Mahomes passing yards, rushing yards, passing TDs, completions, interceptions, longest completion. Repeat that for 50+ players across the slate. The book simply cannot devote the same resources to pricing each of these accurately.
This creates three structural advantages for +EV bettors:
1. Less Sharp Action Corrects Them
Professional bettors can move a spread quickly because the book accepts large bets on main markets. On props, bet limits are lower and sharp action is thinner. A mispriced prop can stay mispriced for hours because nobody is betting enough to move it.
2. Book-to-Book Disagreement Is Highest
When you compare prop lines across sportsbooks, the variance is enormous. DraftKings might have Mahomes Over 275.5 passing yards at -115, while FanDuel has Over 278.5 at -110, and BetMGM has Over 274.5 at -105. That level of disagreement doesn't exist on spreads. Where books disagree, edges exist.
3. Models Are Weaker on Individual Performance
Predicting the outcome of a team game is hard enough. Predicting exactly how many rebounds one player will grab? That depends on matchup, pace, foul trouble, blowout risk, and a dozen other factors. Sportsbook models for props are less refined, which means their lines are less accurate.
The combination of these factors means props are systematically softer than main markets. This isn't a theory — any bettor who tracks their results by market type will confirm that props produce more +EV opportunities per game than any other market.
Where the Biggest Edges Are by Sport
Not all props are created equal. The size and frequency of edges vary across sports. Here's where to focus your attention.
NFL Props
The NFL offers the largest prop markets and some of the most exploitable lines. Key markets include:
Passing Yards: High-volume stat with lots of data points. Books often over- or under-react to matchup changes (backup cornerback starting, weather shifts). The line can be off by 10-15 yards, which creates significant +EV on the over or under.
Rushing Yards: Running back usage is harder to predict than passing volume. Game script heavily influences rushing attempts — a team that falls behind early abandons the run. Books set rushing props pre-game and can't fully account for game flow.
Receiving Yards: Wide receiver and tight end props are among the most mispriced. A WR1 facing a weak secondary in a game with a high total can have 20-30% more upside than his prop suggests. Conversely, a slot receiver against a strong nickel corner can be a strong under.
Touchdowns (Anytime TD Scorer): TD props are notoriously high-variance, but that variance creates opportunity. Books tend to set TD lines based on historical TD rates, but TDs are partly random — the player who scores from the 1-yard line could just as easily have been vultured by the backup. Sharp bettors know which TD props are mispriced relative to expected goal-line usage.
NBA Props
The NBA's fast pace and high-scoring nature create excellent prop markets:
Points: The most liquid prop market in basketball. Player scoring can swing significantly based on whether the opposing team plays at a fast or slow pace, and whether the game stays competitive. Books often set point props based on season averages without fully adjusting for pace matchup.
Rebounds: Heavily matchup-dependent. A center playing against a small-ball lineup will get more rebound opportunities. Books are slow to adjust rebound props for lineup changes that get announced 30-60 minutes before tip.
Assists: Point guard assists are correlated with pace, game closeness, and whether their teammates are hitting shots. These correlations create situations where the book's line doesn't reflect the night's actual conditions.
MLB Props
Baseball props are unique because they're driven by the pitcher-batter matchup:
Strikeouts: Pitcher strikeout props are the best +EV market in baseball. The line depends on the opposing team's strikeout rate, the pitcher's K rate, and the umpire's strike zone tendencies. Books often underweight the umpire factor, and a generous umpire can add 1-2 Ks to a pitcher's expected total.
Hits: Batter hit props (Over/Under 0.5 or 1.5 hits) are influenced by platoon splits (lefty vs. righty), ballpark factors, and the opposing pitcher's WHIP. These micro-factors create small but consistent edges.
NHL Props
Hockey props are less popular but offer excellent value precisely because they get less attention:
Shots on Goal: A player's shot volume depends on power-play time, matchup, and game state. Books set these props with less sophistication than main markets. A player getting promoted to PP1 can see his expected shots jump significantly, and the prop line often lags behind the lineup change.
Points (Goals + Assists): Skater point props are volatile but exploitable, especially for players on the top power-play unit facing a bottom-5 penalty kill.
How to Find +EV Props
Finding +EV props isn't about guessing. It's about a repeatable process that compares what you think the probability should be against what the sportsbook is offering. Here's the framework:
Use a scanner to compare sharp book lines vs soft books. This is the starting point. When the sharp line implies 55% probability but a soft book's odds imply only 48%, there's an edge.
Look for lines where soft books are 3%+ off sharp consensus. Small discrepancies (1-2%) may not be worth betting after accounting for the vig. Look for situations where the soft book is off by 3% or more. These are the highest-confidence +EV plays. The bigger the discrepancy, the larger the expected edge.
Check for relevant news. Before placing the bet, verify there's no information that explains the discrepancy. Is the player injured? Has the lineup changed? Is there weather that affects the stat? If the line discrepancy is explained by news that one book has priced in and another hasn't, the trade may be stale. But if there's no explanatory news, the edge is real.
Size your bets appropriately. Don't bet your entire bankroll on one prop. Use flat betting (same amount on every bet) or a modified Kelly criterion approach. A typical starting point is 1-2% of bankroll per bet. You want to survive variance and build enough sample size to let your edge compound.
Example: Finding a +EV NBA Prop
Pinnacle has Jayson Tatum Over 27.5 points at -115 (implied: 53.5%). DraftKings has Tatum Over 27.5 at -105 (implied: 51.2%). The sharp line says this bet wins 53.5% of the time, but DraftKings is only charging you as if it wins 51.2%. That's a 2.3% edge. With a $100 bet: EV = (0.535 × $95.24) − (0.465 × $105) = $51.00 − $48.83 = +$2.17 per bet.
The Prop Bet Trap
Player props attract two very different types of bettors. The first group uses data, scanners, and systematic processes to find +EV lines. The second group bets on props because they're "fun." The second group funds the first.
Here are the most common traps that recreational bettors fall into with props:
"I just have a feeling Kelce is going to go off tonight"
Gut feelings aren't a probability model. You might feel strongly that Travis Kelce will have a big game, but unless you've analyzed the matchup data, defensive tendencies, and compared your estimate against the book's line, you're gambling — not betting. Feelings are -EV.
"Same-game parlays are the best way to bet props"
SGPs are the single most profitable product for sportsbooks. The correlation between legs is almost never priced fairly by the book, and the parlay vig on a 4-leg SGP can exceed 30-40%. Sportsbooks actively promote SGPs because they're enormously -EV for the bettor. The payout looks exciting. The math is devastating.
"Exotic props like 'first TD scorer' are +EV because the payout is huge"
High payout does not mean +EV. "First TD scorer" props carry enormous vig — often 15-25%. The odds look attractive (+300, +500) but the implied probability is wildly inflated compared to the true probability. These are lottery tickets with terrible odds. Stick to standard over/under props where you can compare lines across books.
"I bet player props based on what analysts say on TV"
TV analysts are entertainers, not odds analysts. Their "picks" are not derived from comparing implied probabilities across sportsbooks. Following media picks on player props is no different from random selection — except you'll feel more confident about your -EV bets, which might actually make things worse because you'll bet larger amounts.
The SGP Tax
A 3-leg same-game parlay with each leg at -110 should pay roughly +595. Most books pay around +500 or less. That gap is a hidden tax of 15%+ that the book pockets. Over time, this tax destroys your bankroll. Bet props individually, not in SGPs.
Systematic Edge Finding
The difference between a recreational prop bettor and a profitable one isn't talent or luck. It's system. Here's how to build a systematic approach to prop betting:

CLV = Your Implied Probability − Closing Implied Probability
If your CLV is consistently positive, you're getting better odds than the market closes at. That means you're finding real edges, regardless of your short-term results.
Review at 500+ bets. Don't evaluate your prop betting strategy after 30 or 50 bets. Variance on individual props is enormous. A player can over- or under-perform his prop on any given night for reasons that have nothing to do with whether your bet was +EV. You need at least 500 bets — ideally 1,000+ — to reliably separate signal from noise.
At 500 bets with a 3% average edge, your expected profit is roughly 15 units. That's meaningful, measurable, and repeatable. At 50 bets with the same edge, you might be up 5 units or down 3 units — either outcome is within the range of normal variance.
Specialize and expand. Start with one sport and one prop type. Learn the rhythms of NBA points props, for example. Understand which books are consistently soft on that market. Once you're profitable and have 500+ tracked bets in that market, expand to rebounds, assists, then move to NFL or MLB. Depth before breadth.
The Compound Effect
A bettor placing 5 +EV prop bets per day at a 3% edge generates roughly $15 in expected profit per day on $100 flat bets. That's $450/month and $5,400/year. Scale the bet size with your bankroll, and the numbers get serious. The edge is small on each bet but enormous in aggregate.
